100 Years Later Four Founders Finally Get Recognition In Madeira
To commemorate the 100th Celebration of the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament, the Club Madeirense S. S. Sacramento, Inc. is giving a gift to the Concelho da Calheta, Madeira Island. It is a dark marble monument with separately etched portraits of each of the original four Madeiran Founders of the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament in New Bedford, Massachusetts, USA. Another plaque, written in Portuguese, tells of their respective roles in founding the first Feast of the Blessed Sacrament back in 1915.
The donation of these plaques was the idea of five members of the Club Madeirense S. S. Sacramento, Inc. who formed a committee to make this gift possible. The men forming this committee were: Joseph V. Sousa, Manuel O. Rodrigues, Jeffrey J. Coutinho, Gabriel A. Coutinho Sr., and curator of the Club’s Museum of Madeiran Heritage, Mrs. Zeta Quintal.
This stone remembrance will be placed in the courtyard of Senhora da Graça Church in Estreito da Calheta. Three of the Founders were from Estreito da Calheta and the fourth was from the neighboring village of Prazeres .
The unveiling of this commemoration will be held on Sunday August 16, 2015. This date coincides with the celebration of the Feast of the Blessed Sacrament in Estreito da Calheta.
Attending the ceremony in Madeira will be the daughter of founder Manuel Coutinho, Ines Coutinho and son Gabriel A. Coutinho Sr. Founder Manuel Agrela’s nephews Antonio Agrela and Constantino Ladeiro will also be present. Gabriel A. Coutinho Sr. will attempt to locate family to represent founders Manuel Duarte and Manuel Gomes Sabastião.
Any members of the Club Madeirense S. S. Sacramento, Inc. and their family or friends who happen to be visiting Madeira at the time of the ceremony are also welcome to attend.
